On
the Rocks lodge is located around 16Kms from the famous Lake Plastira,
named after Nicholas Plastiras. A great militant and political
figure, who in 1925 conceived the idea of diverting the course
of the river Megdovas and building a dam. His idea was realized
after his death and was completed in 1959. The lake spread over
what was once the plateau of Nevropolis making it one of Greece's
largest man-made lakes.
The countryside around Plastiras lake is perfect for a number
of activities such as walking along pathways and through forests,
cross-country cycling, canoeing on the lake, riding, and for Jeep
lovers cross-country driving. The whole route round the lake is
spectacular; forests of fur and oak, ravines, the plane-trees
along the shores of the lake which emerge and vanish behind the
mountain range of Agrapha create a dreamlike picture. No matter
what time of year you choose to visit Lake Plastira, you will
be swept of your feet. |

POSSIBLE SIGHTSEEING AND SUGGESTED DRIVING ROUTE WHILST STAYING
AT ON THE ROCKS LODGE IN MOUZAKI
The lake itself is 25 km west of the town of Karditsa at an
altitude of 1000m.There are 14 villages around the lake, the
first village being Mesenicholas after leaving Karditsa. It
is amphitheatrically built at an altitude of 700 meters, and
is noted for its wine and raki. To the east of the village
is the church of Zoodochos Pigi (The Life-giving Spring) with
frescos dating back to 1646.
Two kilometers further north at an altitude of 880m is Morphovouni,
the birthplace of Nicholaos Plastiras, with a breath-taking
view of the Thessalian plain. Continuing the lakeside route
heading in the direction of the villages looking onto the
lake from Kerasia, the ring-road leads you to Kryoneri, a
village built next to the lake with facilities for tourists.
Hiking tracks wind through the forest of Kryoneri with fur,
oak and chestnut trees. The next village on the shores of
the lake is the Kalivia of Pezoula. It is well-developed for
tourism with organized outdoor areas and beaches. The road
from Pezoula takes you to Fylakti and Neraida. Fylakti lies
at an altitude of 1200m on the steep slopes of Mount Voutsinaki
overlooking a thick fur forest.
The road ends at Fylakti so here we have to turn back towards
Neraida, at a height of 1120m in an area covered in furs and
chestnuts with a panoramic view of the lake. It wasn't just
by chance that the inhabitants of Karditsa chose the area
of Neraida as a pre-war summer resort. A dirt track leads
from Neraida to a tiny rudimentary ski resort 1550m above
sea level which offers a basic sliding ski lift.
Continuing the lakeside drive, head in the direction of Neochori,
a tourist haven and the best-known of the villages around
Lake Plastira. It is built on a mountain slope and offers
the best view of the lake. In Neochori, it is worth visiting
the botanical gardens, which house plants making up the ecosystem
of the local area. The last stop on the route is Plastiras
Dam, a few kilometres outside Neochori after Belokomiti. Here,
admire the beautiful scenery and, if you wish, complete the
lakeside drive by visiting the villages of Moucha, Kastania,
Lambero, Aghio Athanasio and Moschato.
