Hotel Europa. Best Western Europa hotel located on the hills
over Ancient Olympia is the perfect place for travelers on the
roots of ancient Greece. |
|
From the Hotel Europa there is a wide view to the Arcadia mountains
and the valley of Alfios. Famous places like the temple of Epikurios
Apollon or the fortress of Hlemoutsi are easy to reach on a
day tour. Olympia is considered to be one of the most important
sanctuaries of antiquity. Olympia was dedicated to the father
of the gods, Olympian Zeus. It is the birth-place of the Olympic
Games and also the site where they were held every four years
in archaic times. The area has been populated uninterruptedly
since 3000 B.C. and in the late Mycenaean period it became a
religious center. The river Alfios, and one of its branch rivers,
Kladeos, that run near the village, have given the area a great
natural beauty and have helped it prosper throughout the ages.
Some of the most important monuments are: the temple of Zeus,
the temple of Hera, the Philippeion, the Vouleftireion and more.
In addition to the temples, are the remains of all the sports
structures for the Olympic Games, like the Palestra and the
Gymnasium. |

HOW TO GET TO ANCIENT OLYMPIA AND EUROPA HOTEL
Driving to Hotel Europa
and Olympia by car is probably the easiest way to get here.
The are two routes available if your starting point is Athens.
|
The first is via Patras (334km). This is the road used by most
travelers because it is close to the sea and you have some very
beautiful imagery throughout the journey. All you have to choose
is the direction of Patras, then follow on to Pyrgos, and then
Olympia. The second one is via Tripoli (323km). This route will
take you through the mountains of Corinthia, through Artemisio
tunnel, and then downhill from there through the mountains of
Arcadia. This trip is more demanding as there are more twists
and turns to the road, but it is definitely a very wild and
beautiful road to travel. Getting to Olympia by public transport
is not expensive but it is recommended you avoid this means
of transport if you have children, lots of luggage, etc. For
both trains and buses your ticket will get you to Pyrgos. You
then need to get off the bus/train and purchase a ticket for
the remainder of the trip (20km) which also means you will might
have to wait for approximately 20 minutes for your connection. |
