DIMITRA POROS GREECE - Location and General Information

Poros, which translated means passage, is one of the most picturesesque islands of the Saronic Gulf in Greece. The Island lies about 40 Kilometers south of Athens and is a stones throw away from Peloponnese. The locals think of it as Little Venice and you can understand why with the narrow sea canal separating Poros island from the mainland Peloponnese, its traditional houses, the clock tower, the narrow and winding streets, the cafes and restaurants along the quay. Poros used to be spilt into two islands: Kalavria and Spheria. Today the two islands are connected by a small bridge. Kalavria, the more peaceful of the two islands that make up Poros with crystal water and green vegetation. Spheria, where Poros Town is situated, is the smaller of the two islands and this is where you will find the center of nightlife on Poros as well as the many cafes and restaurants. On Poros island the visitor can enjoy water skiing, wind surfing, jet skiing, para sailing and may other water sport activities.

There is an express bus line that departs from Eleftherios Venizelos Athens International Airport, to Piraeus port every 20 minutes, the journey takes around 1 hour and a half. Alternatively, after leaving the Athens airport terminal building you can find many yellow cabs to take you to the harbour of Piraeus.

One can also visit Epidavros with the 4th century BC ancient amphitheater. Thendrive on to Mycenae where you can see the Lions Gate, the Palace of Agamemnon, the grave of circle, the tombs and finally Nafplion the first Capital city of Greece. It is possible also to drive on to the Corinth Canal. You can enjoy a spectacular view from the bridge. The Corinth Canal joins the Peloponnese with the mainland of Greece. Another option is to cruise to Hydra and Spetses island. Cruise from Poros to Spetses to see a beautiful Island full of character, then cruise off to Hydra. Do not forget a donkey ride when you are in Hydra. Staying in Poros offers you a wonderful opportunity to see some of the other Islands of the Saronic gulf.
